The main health and safety risks from biological waste water treatment are associated with:
o Disease causing micro-organisms (pathogens)
o Parasites
o Fumes and inhalation of slurry gases
Well chosen sites, proper operator training, and well-maintained equipment and operating procedures can all but eliminate these risks by using Anaerobic Digestion (AD).
Environmental Benefits
o AD reduces odors by greater than 95%
o AD reduces nitrate pollution of water from run off by more effective control of nutrient uptake
o Thermophillic AD eliminates weed seeds and the spread of disease
o Well managed AD captures methane emissions which would have 21 times the global warming potential of CO2 if left un-contained as is the case with other waste management methods.
o AD helps bio and organic waste generators (farmers, food processors, other industry) to respond to new regulations and public pressure to increase the effectiveness of waste residue management |
